Upper School: Departments

English and History

In grades 9 and 10, English and History is offered as integrated paired electives, with a different selection each trimester. Examples include the following:
  • Contemporary Asian Literature and Modern Asian History
  • Modern European Literature and Modern European History
  • Latin American Literature and Early History of South America
In grade 11, students take coordinated year-long courses in US History and American Literature.

In grade 12 students choose from a selection of six trimester length English electives such as: Modernist Literature, Film and Music or Studies in Literature and the Natural Enviroment. 12th Grade "history" broadens to a range of social science courses. Trimester electives include: Democratic Theories and Civic Practices, The Economics of Development, and Jurisprudence:The History of Legal Precedent in the United States.

Fine and Performing Arts

Trimester-length courses in areas such as painting, drawing, graphic design, web page design, improvisation, script-writing, drama, and choral music are offered.

Math

Students progress through Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, and culminate with three trimester length courses in Advanced Calculus. Additionally, a year long course in Statistics can be taken at several points in the curriculum.

Physical Education

Physical Education is required for all students until the graduation requirement is met. The focus is on life-long fitness.

Science

Students progress through Conceptual Physics, Chemistry, and Biology in grades 9 through 11. In grade 12, two year-long advanced courses are offered, Advanced Physics and Enviromental Science.

Spanish

Spanish is offered at six different levels in the Upper School, from introductory through college-level language and literature courses.
