Upper School: Overview

In Upper School, students prepare for their future. There are specific and important skills that all well-educated individuals need. Thinking critically is one of those skills. Integrating and synthesizing information is another. Writing is a third. Our students will use and improve upon these skills for the rest of their lives.

Our classes include more than analysis and discussion. Students make the whole world their classroom. They are given opportunities to apply knowledge, to interact with many different people, and to make significant contributions to their communities.

How to Thrive in Upper School

Prepare Projects.

Our yearly Impact Projects are designed to empower students, to encourage self-reliance, to teach responsible choice-making, and to promote exploration. (See more about Impact Projects under Curriculum.)

Pursue Interests and Work Toward Excellence.

We want to encourage students to learn about themselves, to follow a passion, and to have an impact on the community or the school by working toward excellence. For especially dedicated students, Eastside Prep allows students to pursue their own interests such as drama, music, art, sports, technology, or volunteering outside of our curriculum.

Write, write, write.

Students write extensively in all classes, receive thorough feedback, and edit and re-write to hone their skills. In addition to our standard classes, Eastside Prep offers Writer’s Workshop electives and Writing Tutorial opportunities.

Get Out of the Classroom and Connect to the Real World.

We provide opportunities for travel, internships, and service that take students out of the classroom and into the world. Our aim is to help students understand the significance of what they are learning in the classroom. An interdisciplinary approach is essential in a world full of multiple perspectives.

Make Masterful Use of Technology.

Upper School students use tablet PCs. Students learn to use technology as a tool for organization, scheduling, and communication. Appropriate technology is available for analyzing data, conducting research, making multi-media presentations, and more.

Prepare for College Thoughtfully.

We work with students and families to plan for the college application process. Our courses are designed to prepare students for both SAT I and SAT II tests. Although Eastside Prep does not designate any courses as AP, students are guided to take these tests where appropriate. College admission officers already are visiting the school, and more will be scheduled as we add an 11th grade.
