Dear Friends, Families and Supporters of Eastside Preparatory School,
At the risk of jinxing us, it’s hard to believe that this is winter. If you recall, warm weather and sun breaks were not a part of our January/February landscape last year. For as long as this lasts, this is a welcome change—except for the skiers and snow-boarders in our community!
Just in case you were wondering why the banner at the bottom of the front page wasn’t a banner headline at the top of the front page—we didn’t want to be perceived as tooting our horn (too much). And here’s the wonderful and fantastic and welcome news—Eastside Preparatory School has been awarded full accreditation by the Pacific Northwest Association of Independent Schools! Congratulations to all involved with this achievement.
Our Director of Counseling and Learning Resources, Dr. Kelly Moore, returns to the front-page with a well-timed article about metacognition. Following this train of thought (sorry about the pun), Dr. Macaluso, our Head of School, offers a helpful reminder about the difficult-to-detect learning that is taking place everyday at EPS—you’ll want to encourage her to take up the cello again!
Bart Gummere, our Upper School Head, introduces another tradition we plan to continue at EPS, the annual return of EPS alumni, and the helpful advice they provide to our current students about preparing for life in college. Our Middle School Head, Sam Uzwack, reminds us all of the key place experiential learning holds in our curriculum.
Skipping to the back page of the newsletter, you will find our School Calendar, which lists important February, March and April dates. Please also take note of the opening of the Middle School Play, “More Grimm Tales,” which will be performed from February 8-10 in the Black Box Theatre.
Jonathan Briggs, our Director of Technology, foreshadows an important event, our March 18th E-Talk, and our Librarian, Karen Mills, will hopefully inspire many of us to add new selections to our reading lists—check-out what some of our parents are currently reading.
Our Dean of Students and Athletics Director Jeff Adair provides important news about our growing athletics offerings and reveals that female student participation in athletics is now outpacing the boys. Lauren Formo returns to the newsletter with an interview with Paul Hagen, our new MS Historical Thinking teacher.
Our next issue (our 5th of the year) will be published and distributed in mid to late April, 2010.
As always, please accept our thanks for your interest in and support of Eastside Preparatory School. You are all valued members of our community, and we’re happy to provide you with our six-times-a-year update.
We hope you will enjoy the February newsletter and, more importantly, please accept our best wishes for a restful, rewarding, safe and re-energizing mid-Winter Break!
