2/4/2009 - February Newsletter
|
 |

Dear Friends, Families and Supporters of Eastside Preparatory School,
Our fourth newsletter of the academic year and our first newsletter of 2009 is now available!
We continue to receive favorable feedback about Academic Dean Jeff Sanderson’s articles about thinking and learning, so we hope you will enjoy his next entry, the fourth in his series of six articles based upon John Medina’s “Brain Rules.” As a reminder, this book was read by all faculty and staff this summer and Dr. Medina provided a wonderful lecture on the contents of this work in late August.
Many parents have also commented on the helpful nature of last issue’s articles on managing technology in the home, particularly with regard to homework. Jonathan Briggs’ Technology Corner offers a reprise of this topic.
Leadership, Graduation, and Ambiguity. These three heady themes dominate the articles of our Division Heads and Head of School. Dr. Macaluso, our Head of School, suggests that leadership is enhanced by a supporting colleague. Upper School Head Bart Gummere brings us all up-to-date on our first Senior Class’ current application status—very good news, indeed. And, to complete our trio’s articles, Wendy Lawrence, the Head of the Middle School reminds us of our intentional inclusion of ambiguity in our strategic approach to our day-to-day teaching.
This month’s Library Corner takes a moment to recognize our team of Library Volunteers—a much-needed reminder about the value of a supportive community. This week the The Parent Association forecasts two important events on the horizon, including the annual Faculty/Staff Recognition event.
On the back page of the newsletter, you will find our School Calendar, which lists important February and March dates. Whether you are more inclined to have an interest in the arts or in athletics, we have something for both crowds. Check out the student-authored article on Eastside Prep’s double-overtime basketball victory and, if you also enjoy the arts, we hope you will enjoy our regularly-featured student-created visual artwork and Michael Cruz’ article about the Upper School theatre production.
Lauren Formo returns to the newsletter with an interview with Ana Swanson, our MS administrative assistant and cheerleading coach. Finally, we hope you will enjoy reading about our students’ recent philanthropic work, the Penny Harvest!
Please recall that we have opted to publish six issues this year, not our customary nine issues. Because so many of you have been enjoying the updates you receive in our weekly Friday e-mails, we believe this new publication calendar will be more effective. Our next issue will be published and distributed on April 20th, 2009.
As always, please accept our thanks for your interest in and support of Eastside Preparatory School. You are all valued members of our community, and we’re happy to provide you with our six-times-a-year update.
We hope you will enjoy the February newsletter, and please accept our best wishes for a happy Groundhog Day. Here’s to a warm and early arrival of Spring, in spite of Punxsutawney Phil’s prediction!
Sincerely,
Eastside Preparatory School
