Dear Friends, Families and Supporters of Eastside Preparatory School,

April 2009 Newsletter

Our fifth newsletter of the academic year (and our second newsletter of 2009) is now available!

We continue to receive favorable feedback about Academic Dean Jeff Sanderson’s articles about thinking and learning, so we hope you will enjoy his next entry, the fifth in his series of six articles based upon John Medina’s “Brain Rules.” As a reminder, this book was read by all faculty and staff this summer and Dr. Medina provided a wonderful lecture on the contents of this work in late August.

Dr. Macaluso, our Head of School, ponders the current student body and wonders, who among this group is the next leader, innovator or diplomat? Middle School Head Wendy Lawrence reminds us that getting involved in Earth Day activities can lead to a life-long commitment to earth-friendly choices. Upper School Head Bart Gummere reflects on our recent Spring Adventures and considers their not-so-immediately-apparent benefits.

In this month’s Library Corner, Karen Mills gives the entire community several award-winning options for summer reading. Kathy Weber, president of The Parent Association asks all of us to participate in an April 25th Earth Day event—save the date!

If you are on the look-out for fun AND educational resources on-line, please peruse Jonathan Briggs’ Technology Corner.

On the back page of the newsletter, you will find our School Calendar, which lists important April, May and June dates. Please make your reservations now for the May 13th and 14th production of Little Shop of Horrors or take special note of two red letter dates—our 8th grade Continuation Ceremony will be held Thursday, June 11th, and our first-ever 12th Grade Graduation Ceremony will be held Friday, June 12th!!!

Lauren Formo returns to the newsletter with an interview with Sam Uzwack, our MS Head who will be joining our school this summer. And, we are “flushed” with pride by the fact that two of our faculty, Dr. Henry and Dr. Olsen, were recently featured as the authors of an article in Biocycle Magazine—their article is published for your reading pleasure.

Please recall that we have opted to publish six issues this year, not our customary nine issues. Because so many of you have been enjoying the updates you receive in our weekly Friday e-mails, we believe this new publication calendar will be more effective. Our next issue will be published and distributed on June 1st, 2009.

As always, please accept our thanks for your interest in and support of Eastside Preparatory School. You are all valued members of our community, and we’re happy to provide you with our six-times-a-year update.

We hope you will enjoy the April newsletter, and please enjoy the sunshine today!

Sincerely,

Eastside Preparatory School
