7/27/2009 - Summer “4th Quarter” Class – Trip to Ecuador
|
 |

Eight 7-8th graders, two faculty, and fourteen days of unique experiences!
Dr. Chuck Henry, Eastside Prep Impact Center (EPIC) Director and Dr. Elena Olsen, Upper School English teacher, and a group of Eastside Prep Middle Schoolers have returned from an educational and fun-filled trip to Ecuador.
The Ecuador trip provided students opportunities to explore another culture, to use the Spanish language skills they have been acquiring in Spanish classes, and every day the students explored the diverse environments of Ecuadorian flora and fauna.
Highlights included horse rides at 11,000 feet and to an active volcano, as well as snorkeling with tortoises and sea lions. One of the more memorable moments took place when students stood with one foot on each side of the equator!
In addition to these amazing experiences, the students also had the opportunity to do some meaningful service-oriented work. Our Eastside Prep students cleaned and painted a room for a library and, in coordination with the Bellevue Breakfast Rotary Club, ensured that eight donated laptop computers arrived. Using skills learned in EPS EPIC class, our students also taught soap making to a women’s group.
The group’s Ecuadorian adventure began in Quito in the Andes, en route to the Black Sheep Inn, where they stayed for 4 days. Then, back to Quito to catch a flight to a five-day stay in the Galapagos, enjoying the unique wildlife, scenery, and numerous sessions on the beach.
A truly successful, hands-on experiential learning trip!
