Dear Friends, Families and Supporters of Eastside Preparatory School,
September Newsletter 2009
Welcome to our seventh year of school! It’s hard to believe that it’s been twelve weeks and five days since we held our first commencement exercise! This summer has been intensely busy and productive—and time has flown by!
We hope you will enjoy our cover photo spread on some of the more dramatic changes that occurred since early June. All of you are welcome to explore our expanded campus to see the new spaces. We’ve come a long way since opening the school on the first floor of building 24. (For those of you who are new to Eastside Prep, that’s the main Middle School building!)
Dr. Macaluso, our Head of School, opens the year with an article about visiting author Alan Lightman and the art of thinking—we hope you will enjoy her article and, furthermore, be sure to RSVP for the September 17th speaking event, when Mr. Lightman will be speaking to our community, at 7:30 p.m., in the cafeteria—you can reserve your seats now by e-mailing tlindsey@eastsideprep.org. Seating is limited, and we are already about one-third reserved—please reserve your seats before the event is completely filled. Bart Gummere, our Upper School Head, encourages all of us to openly communicate when questions and concerns arise. Our new Middle School Head, Sam Uzwack, debuts with a column that explains what motivates and inspires him to work with Middle School students and their families.
We’re pleased to announce a new column, written by a veteran EPS teacher, who will be adding a title this year—please take a moment to read Jeff Adair’s column describing his new role as Dean of Students.
Skipping to the back page of the newsletter, you will find our School Calendar, which lists important September and October dates. Our regularly-featured Parent Association (PA) Update, for example, urges you to save the date for a fun event for all EPS Parents, the second annual Fall Harvest Wine Tasting event.
Lauren Formo returns to the newsletter with an interview with Dr. Kelly Moore, our new school counselor—please be sure to read this and, when the opportunity presents itself, to welcome Kelly to our community.
Jonathan Briggs, our Director of Technology, uses his column to highlight the summer tech upgrades to our campus, and our Librarian, Karen Mills, shares a few examples of the faculty and staff’s summer reading list.
Finally, we have an update about our school accreditation process, as well as an “ad” for auditions for the Upper School play, Antigone, and an announcement about a relatively new communication channel for us, our EPS Facebook page!
Our next issue will be published and distributed in early October, 2009.
As always, please accept our thanks for your interest in and support of Eastside Preparatory School. You are all valued members of our community, and we’re happy to provide you with our six-times-a-year update. We hope you will enjoy the September newsletter, and please accept our best wishes for a fantastic 2009-2010 school year!
Sincerely,
Eastside Preparatory School
