Theme: The Arts
What can we learn about ourselves and others from the words we speak, how we say them, and our reactions to others’ use of language? More than you might think! During this EBC experience, students will explore the relationship between language, identity, and culture. We will learn about the Oakland Ebonics controversy of the mid-1990s, the importance of Lushootsheet to our region, and some basic sociolinguistic theory. Students will also reflect on the influence of language on their own identities and create a final project to showcase their learning.
