Dates: 4/5 – 4/10
Location: Domestic
Price Range: $2800-$3400
Theme: Arts & Culture
Faculty Contact: Maritza Tavarez-Brown

Let’s go to the American southwest for one of the premier star-gazing and astronomy research locations on this planet. This will be a stellar experience! Three core days will be run in partnership with the Sky School out of the University of Arizona. Besides living on campus and experiencing some of that campus life, students will venture for a night at the Kitt Peak National Observatory and to U of A’s Mount Lemmon Skycenter. Guided by graduate students, EBC participants will pursue their own inquiry-based projects in astronomy. We will also explore Indigenous tribes long history with astronomy and some of the contemporary issues at the intersection of tribal rights and scientific research. Other highlights of this EBC include hiking in the Sonoran desert, a visit to the Tohono O’Odham Cultural Center, plus other fun activities and great southwestern/Mexican food around Tucson. Be part of this astronomy deep dive in the desert southwest!
  • Students and families should be aware that this experience includes:
    • Extended time outdoors in the desert environment, with exposure to sun, heat, and dry conditions
    • Travel and overnight stays at high altitudes, which may cause mild physical adjustment for some participants
    • Late nights and variable sleep schedules due to nighttime astronomy research and observation
    • Moderate physical activity including walking and hiking in desert terrain
    • Immersion in both university and field settings, requiring adaptability and respect for varied environments
    • Engagement with complex cultural and ethical topics at the intersection of Indigenous rights and scientific research
    • Limited access to technology during excursions, encouraging focus, teamwork, and reflective learning
