Join us to explore the preservation of African-American history and culture in Savannah and Georgia’s coastal islands. Through cultural immersion, we explore how different people and institutions are preserving the vibrant and powerful history of African-Americans in the Lowcountry. Focusing on the themes of race, slavery, and education, we will hands-on explore the impact of geography, environment, and diaspora on the development of community values. Our focus includes two major experiences: the urban environment of the great city of Savannah and the rural Gullah-Geechee culture on the barrier sea islands.
What an incredible opportunity to venture to both of these places. Peppered throughout the week will be delicious Southern food in restaurants and roadside markets, plus beach walking, city strolling, basket weaving, and other fun activities. Sink deep into culture, food, and community in this Georgia adventure.
