Insight: From Orientations to Empathy – Connection at EPS
By Paul Hagen, Director of Student Well-Being
Yesterday morning, when I asked our new 5th graders why we do Fall Orientations, one of them responded without hesitation, “I think it’s so we can connect.” While I hadn’t quite explained it that way before, the more I think about it, the more I believe that’s exactly right.
Fall Orientations are all about connection—connecting with new friends, reconnecting with old ones, connecting with teachers and advisors, and deepening our ties within the broader community. These bonds form the foundation of Eastside Prep’s spirit. If the experience of remote learning during COVID taught us anything, it’s that connection is paramount. We choose to do school together, not because we have to, but because we want to. It’s better this way—learning and growing side by side. Fall Orientations are a celebration of this togetherness, and they remind us that we are stronger as a community when we are connected.
Over the past two days, through rafting and ropes courses, team-building exercises and service projects, name games, and a community art project (check it out on the TALI gallery wall!), we’ve experienced firsthand how meaningful these connections can be. These moments of shared adventure, challenge, and creativity set the tone for the year ahead and remind us that our best work and most rewarding experiences happen when we engage fully with one another.
But connection doesn’t end with Orientations—it’s just the beginning. As we dive into a school year full of opportunities to connect—in the classroom, on athletic teams, in performances, clubs, and social events—our theme of Empathetic Dialogue will guide us. Rooted in connection, Empathetic Dialogue encourages us to listen deeply, exchange ideas thoughtfully, and build genuine understanding across our diverse community. It’s a powerful way to strengthen our relationships and foster a sense of belonging for every student, teacher, and family member.
Together, let’s continue to work to make EPS an even more supportive and vibrant place. Here’s to a fantastic year ahead!
