Insight: Intentional Impact
By Sam Uzwack, Head of School
One of the things I’ve been thinking about a lot this year is how much our lives are shaped not just by big decisions, but by small, everyday choices—how we show up for one another, how thoughtfully we listen, how willing we are to pause before reacting, and how conscious we are of the impact we have on the people around us. That thinking became the foundation for the spring issue of our Inspire magazine: “Responsible Action: Intentional Impact.”
When we talk about responsibility at Eastside Prep, I don’t think it’s simply about following rules or avoiding mistakes. To me, it’s about recognizing that our actions matter. The words we choose, the ways we engage with our community, the effort we put into understanding perspectives different from our own—all of these things shape the culture we create together. Intentionality asks us to slow down enough to think critically and act with purpose, especially in a world that often encourages the opposite.
This month, we published the spring issue of Inspire. As you read through it, I think you’ll see that idea reflected in many different ways. You’ll meet students who are learning how to lead thoughtfully, faculty and staff who continue to challenge themselves and grow, and community members who are finding meaningful ways to contribute to something larger than themselves. What ties these stories together is not perfection, but care: the willingness to engage deeply, thoughtfully, and compassionately with the world around us.
One of the things I love most about schools is that they are places where people are constantly becoming. Every day at EPS, I see students—and adults—trying, reflecting, adjusting, and trying again. That process of growth is deeply connected to intentional action. The strongest communities aren’t built accidentally; they are built by people who choose, over and over again, to invest in one another. Thanks to you all for making that choice and investing in this community.
I hope this issue gives you a glimpse into the many ways that happens here every day.
