Insight: EPS Impact Center – Connecting Students to the World Beyond the Classroom
By Sam Uzwack, Head of School
At Eastside Prep, we believe that learning should extend beyond the classroom. That’s why we’re excited to share the vision for the EPS Impact Center—a two-building initiative designed to connect students with the professional world and the natural environment in meaningful, hands-on ways.
Building 5: A Window to the Professional World
Goal: Create a space where students can engage with professionals, collaborate with one another, and develop durable skills
Feel: Like your favorite neighborhood coffee shop or local library—warm, welcoming, and full of energy
Building 5 is being reimagined as a vibrant hub where students can connect with mentors, collaborate on projects, and explore their interests in a relaxed, inspiring setting.
What’s Happening Inside:
- In-Residence Program: Professionals from tech, writing, and the arts will work on-site, offering students a glimpse into their creative and professional processes
- Independent Curriculum Workspace: A flexible area for students to pursue our Independent Curriculum
- Study Groups & Faculty Collaboration: Spaces for deep thinking, group work, and long-term projects
Smart Use of Resources:
We’re making the most of what we already have—repurposing furniture and technology to create a dynamic, student-centered space.
Building 6: A Gateway to Nature and Sustainability
Goal: Inspire innovative thinking about the environment and sustainability
Feel: A hands-on environmental lab, alive with ideas and discovery
Building 6 will serve as a launchpad for environmental learning and innovation. It’s a place where students can study nature, experiment with sustainable practices, and imagine a greener world.
Possibilities Include:
- Environmental Science, Environmental Practices, & Ecology Classes: A space for our existing courses that bring science to life through fieldwork and experimentation
- Outdoor Classrooms & Field Labs: Learning spaces that connect students directly with the natural world
- Sustainability Projects & Displays: Showcasing student work and environmental initiatives
- Environmental Consultant In-Residence: Bringing real-world expertise into the classroom
A Two-Phase Approach:
- Phase 1: Focus on sustainability by reusing and recycling materials
- Phase 2: Transform the space into a model of environmental innovation—exploring solar panels, gray water systems, and more. The 2025-26 school year will be dedicated to research and planning.
Why It Matters
The EPS Impact Center is more than just a new use of space—it’s a reflection of our values. By creating environments that connect students to the professional and natural worlds, we’re helping them become thoughtful, engaged, and capable citizens of the future. Also emblematic of our values, we are trying new things and learning as we go, and I look forward to our students aiding us as we push the frontiers of secondary education.
