Why Rules?

The need for a Student Handbook comes from a desire to create the best learning community possible. As you read and think about these rules, reflect on this piece of writing by our founding students in the classes of 2009 and 2010. They describe the ideal morning at school, a morning that happens when everyone follows the principles of respect outlined in this Handbook.

When I walk into school in the morning, my friends are there and greeting me. There are students hanging out around the school doing many different things. Some are reading, others are talking or playing games. Some are organizing their lockers and their stuff for the day. I am in a place where I am comfortable and relaxed. I walk into class and everyone is ready for the lesson. It isn’t time to start, so I chat with my friends, but no one is shouting… During the class, I get the chance to help other people learn and they help me; no one makes fun of other people’s answers. Classes are fun and interesting, and students are engaged and having fun. After class, students walk around the school, use the bathroom, get snacks, visit their lockers, and chat with each other. I use this time to get ready for my next class and after that, it’s time for lunch. I have a good lunch; everyone is having fun and they are included and respected. After I eat, I clean up my space so that others have a clean space to use.
