A Pacific Northwest native, Sammy moved to Seattle for the second time in 2017. His first Seattle stint was 2000-02 when he was a 23 year-old homeless youth advocate who spent his off-hours playing chess in Capitol Hill cafes by day and post-punk music with his friends at night. Because none of those things paid the bills, Sammy took out more student loans and moved to the South where he knew nobody. He received his PhD in Sociology at Vanderbilt University and continued teaching classes there in the American Studies department until 2017. Sammy now joins the Social Science faculty at EPS full time after temporarily covering Upper School history classes here in the Spring of 2019.
