Optional All-School Book Discussion

Seniors Dana Hoballah and Eliana Swai and faculty sponsor Jeff Bandel invite you to an optional literary conversation; a Community-Wide Book Club. The theme of the series is Courage and Defiance. More than ever, this year we have become aware of the importance of courage and defiance when dealing with COVID-19, racial reckoning, and unprecedented political polarization. This book club series aims to create open dialogue about what persistence looks like in the face of challenges and injustice through the writings of BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) authors. The series is open to the entire EPS community of students, parents, siblings, family, alumni, faculty, and staff.  We have planned three separate discussions based on three interesting books. We hope you will join us for one or for all three!

“In her memoir, a work of deep reflection and mesmerizing storytelling, Michelle Obama invites readers into her world, chronicling experiences that have shaped her—from her childhood on the South Side of Chicago to her years as an executive balancing the demands of motherhood and work, to her time spent at the world’s most famous address. With unerring honesty and lively wit, she describes her triumphs and disappointments, both public and private, telling her full story as she has lived it—in her own words and on her own terms.  Warm, wise and revelatory. Becoming is the deeply personal reckoning of a woman of soul and substance who has steadily defied expectations—and whole story inspired us to do the same.”

While Becoming is widely available online and at area bookstores as well as public libraries, we want to ensure that everyone who wants to participate can and that access to the book does not pose a barrier. With this in mind we have a limited number of books available to loan out on a first-come, first-served basis. If you would like a book, or have any other questions please reach out to Activities and Clubs Coordinator Sam Baldwin.
